- Take a Walking Tour This is one way to learn about the history of Charleston. You can take the tour on foot with a guide who will show you along the streets of the city. There are also carriage tours as well.
- Stick your feet in one of the fountains. On a hot and humid day in Charleston, you'll want to cool off in one of the fountains near the shore. I dipped my feet into this pineapple one, and it felt extremely refreshing
- Go walking at night While you can see a ton of cool things during the day, the city gives a different experience when the sun goes down.
- Stop at the Market The market holds so many local vendors and it's really fun to see how creative people can be!
- Visit the Hunley An old submarine was found right off the coast of Charleston, and you can visit it and take a tour to see it
- See Rainbow Row It's kind of a landmark, and you have to do it!
- Grab some ice. There are shaved ice carts all around the city, I believe they're all students raising money for college (which is actually located in Charleston itself!)
- Visit Plantations There is an entire street loaded with plantations that guests can tour. Though I didn't go on this trip, they look amazing and I would love to the next time I'm around!
- Eat at Jestine's and Hyman's. I can't mention one and not say the other, as they're both my favorite spots to eat in the city!
- Visit the Churches. It's not called the 'Holy City' for nothing! Charleston is decorated with amazing architecture and the churches are so pretty.
I love traveling, having just been in Charleston in June you've probably gotten sick of all of the travel posts by now. There was so much to do down south that I have a lot to share.
Remember when I said we were stuck in Charleston? Down south, they have a law that says nobody can work on Sunday, therefore our truck wasn't going to be done until Monday which left us a full day in downtown Charleston.
5 years ago, in the month of June, my family and I did a different road trip where we spent the last few days in Charleston and then Nashville. When we had the opportunity to spend (what we thought) would be just one night back in Charleston, we wanted to eat at a local favorite.
Our shuttle driver, JP, suggested Jestine's, which is near the historic district and as we drove past the restaurant, four out of five of us immediately recognized the place. Jestine's was our favorite spot to eat when we were there five years ago and we were eating there again.
Walking into Jestine's I immediately knew where we had sat 5 years ago, which means not much as changed. Which is really great. There weren't any lines and we got in right away. At a popular place like Jestine's lines are pretty common and last time we had to wait about an hour before getting a table for four. This time we had my step sister along, and our party of five was seated right away.
The four of us that had been there before, reminisced about the cornbread and fried chicken (their specialty). We ordered cornbread for an appetizer, and put in our orders of food.
Jestine's is located at 251 Meeting St, Charleston, SC
Do you ever just sit back and think about what life would have been like 300-400+ years ago. It would be about 1716 or 1616. There's a reason I'm asking you this, don't worry.
There's a tree just outside of Charleston South Carolina, that is about that age. It's been there for a really long time and it's massive. We drove down a slightly bumpy, unpaved road and stood in awe of this huge tree.
If you were alive 400 years ago, what do you think you would be doing? Do you think you'd like it? I don't really know if I would, everything now has made life so much easier.
It would be really nice to tell you that it never rained on my trip down south, but that would be a lie. The weather held off for us until we were under shelter, and could make our way quickly from the hotel to another restaurant.
Sunny Point Cafe was another spot on our recommendation list given to us when we checked into our hotel. It was located just down the highway from where we were staying, half indoors and half under a porch area. I ordered a little cocktail that arrived in such a pretty pink color with a flower to top it off.
Before I go, I do want to share this delicious Avocado-Tomato Quinoa Salad I made the other night for dinner! What You'll Need:
- Avocado
- Cherry Tomatoes
- Feta Cheese
- Mushrooms
- Spinach
- Onions
- Peppers
- Quinoa
- Start by making the quinoa (2 cups water per 1 cup quinoa), boil water and add quinoa, bring to a boil then lower heat and cover and let simmer for about 5-7 minutes. Until quinoa has white spiral-like threads on it
- Saute vegetables except tomato in separate pan (I used 1/4 cup diced onions, 1 cup diced peppers and 1/4 cup chopped mushrooms)
- Put spinach in bowl
- Drain Quinoa and about half to your bowl
- Add veggies
- Top with tomatoes, avocado, feta cheese (or no cheese)
